So, I promised an update on yesterday's travels so here goes...
After getting off of the plane in Frankfurt and getting our luggage, we boarded a van and drove the hour to Heidelberg, Germany. Heidelberg is in the southwest part of Germany and is the oldest university town there (the university was founded in 1386). Heidelberg was completely destroyed in 1693 by the French and was rebuilt soon after. Now, 140,000 people live there and 30,000 are students--hence the large amount of students we saw wandering around in between classes.
Besides being an old and beautiful university town, a big attraction in Heidelberg is the MASSIVE castle. The earliest parts of the castle were built in the 14th century and parts have been destroyed several times since. Many fairytales say that the castle was destroyed during WWII but our tour guide said it's not so.
So, as you can see, Heidelberg has a lot of history to it (sorry for the boring information for those of you who just want exciting details...I've got parents, you know!) After touring Heidelberg and eating lunch there, we got back on the bus for a 2 hour trip to Strasbourg. The countryside was gorgeous as usual although I was having some trouble keeping my eyes opened. I forced myself to stay awake though so sleeping that night would be easy.
When we arrived at the Chateau, I was shocked. It is absolutely incredible. It isn't a brand new castle and I love that. The wooden floors throughout make creaking noises and the "bathrooms" only have showers meaning that there is another room for the toilet down the hall. After lugging our luggage (no pun intended) up two flights of narrow, winding staircases, we got into our rooms, dropped off our luggage, and took a deep breath. Then, we had orientation with mimosas and champagne before dinner.
We walked to the restaurant that sits about 200 yards from the Chateau. Le cordon bleu and creme brulee was for dinner and let me tell you what...I will have it again before I leave. Yummy yummy yummy!
After dinner, I came back and called home and then crashed. I don't think my bed at home has ever felt that good! :) One day down...24 more to go!
